The opening kickoff return Dorwen Vedrine returned for a TD giving us great momentum to start the game. With our defense on the field we knew we had to prevent he QB for Coral Glades from running the ball. He was a good sized athlete who preferred to run the ball. We failed to do our gap responsibilities on defense on two plays and he broke long runs that should not have happened. The running back from Coral Glades also broke a long run due to three missed tackles in one play. Then our freshman running back, Shawn Rice, fumbled for a long TD return that took away a major portion of momentum. Shawn fumbled a second time and really put us in a hole. Then leading interceptor for our defense last season, Kaleb DeClaire, came up with two interceptions to get us back a bunch of momentum. We struggled to block the defensive line for Coral Glades and went through several different offensive linemen to see who was up for the task. An extreme amount of penalties continued to kill our offensive momentum and then QB Sakib Muhammad underthrew a would-be TD pass, which ended up as an interception and would eventually lead us to overtime. We won the toss in overtime and elected to go on defense first. Our defense forced them into a field goal attempt, which we blocked and could have returned for a TD but the referees blew it dead. But nonetheless, in overtime Sakib ran a 34 yard QB run for the walk off TD that led to a great celebration as the team started the season 1-0. Sakib. Muhammad was named player of the game.
